Good Friday – Standing at the Cross

9am, April 3rd 2026 at Willoughby Uniting Church – Clanwilliam St, Willoughby.

Good Friday is the most solemn day of the Christian year. It is the day we pause, remember, and stand at the foot of the cross. It is a day marked by quiet reflection, honest grief, and deep gratitude for the self-giving love of Christ.

On this day, we remember the arrest, trial, suffering, and crucifixion of Jesus. The one who proclaimed love, justice, and the coming reign of God was rejected and executed by the powers of his time. The cross reveals both the depth of human brokenness and the boundless compassion of God.

Good Friday invites us to sit with the story rather than rush past it. We hear again the passion narrative. We listen to Jesus’ final words. We notice the courage of those who stayed, the silence of those who fled, and the grief of those who loved him. In the darkness of this day, we are reminded that God does not stand far off from suffering – God enters it.

The cross has long been understood not as a symbol of defeat, but as the place where love refuses to give up. In Jesus’ willingness to endure injustice rather than return violence, we glimpse a different way of being human. Good Friday speaks to every experience of pain, loss, and injustice in our world. It assures us that nothing – not even death – can separate us from the love of God.

We invite you to join us this Good Friday as we gather to remember, to pray, and to place our hope in the love that holds even in the darkest hour. All are welcome.
