Maundy Thursday – A Night of Love, Service, and New Commandment
7pm, April 2nd 2026 at Northbridge Uniting Church – Gunyah St, Northbridge.
Join us for a contemplative community meal, remembering the Last Supper. A moment of reflection, connection, and sacred remembrance.
Maundy Thursday marks the beginning of the great Three Days of Easter. It is a deeply meaningful evening in the life of the Church, inviting us into the story of Jesus’ final meal with his disciples, his act of humble service, and his new commandment to love one another.
The word Maundy comes from the Latin mandatum, meaning commandment. On this night we remember Jesus’ words in John 13:34 – “I give you a new commandment, that you love one another. Just as I have loved you, you also should love one another.” This commandment is at the heart of the Christian life – love expressed not just in words, but in action.
On the night before his crucifixion, Jesus gathered with his disciples for a meal we now know as the Last Supper. During this meal, he took bread and wine and gave them new meaning, offering them as signs of his self-giving love. From this moment, the Church has continued the practice of Holy Communion as a living remembrance of Christ’s presence among us.
The service often concludes in quietness, with the stripping of the altar and the dimming of lights, preparing us to enter the solemn journey toward Good Friday. It is a tender, reflective space – one that holds sorrow and gratitude together.
We invite you to join us this Maundy Thursday as we gather around the table, remember Christ’s love, and recommit ourselves to living that love in our community and the world. All are welcome.
